Australia has many species of jellyfish which can affect humans. The Australian Box Jellyfish is the only proven lethal species but there are many others which can give you bad stings.
In the images below is another type I found. I have no idea what it is. I decided to pick it up, wash the sand off it, and take some 'arty' photos. Enjoy.

Very cool. It looks like a blue glass brain.
I have never seen a jelly fish before outside of water. blue glass brain is a good description.
PS: to save future injury to those reading your post, it's not necessarily a 'safe' Jellyfish.
The Blue Blubber sting "can be painful but generally poses no serious risk to humans".
You've had no problems touching it as the tentacles (carrying the stinging cells) have washed/rotted away prior to your discovery :)
